Barro Negro and Alebrije are two of the crafts that are famous in Oaxaca. Barro Negro are potteries made from the special clay that exists in Oaxaca and Alegrije are little odd looking figurines made out of wood. They are made in two separate small towns on the outskirt of downtown Oaxaca. You can usually take the bus there for about 5 pesos or the collectivos (taxi sharing...hehehe...one hell of an experience) to get there. The name of the town that makes the barro negro is called San Bartolo. I apologize that I forgot the name of the other town that makes the Alebrije but if you ask around I am sure the locals will let you know.
Small barro negro should cost about 30 pesos where as the large ones should cost about 100-250 pesos. Do not buy these things in downtown Oaxaca as the prices are extremely inflated. Buy them at where they are made. Sorry I don't have photos of Alebrijes.
I befriended a guy named Alvaro who lives in the town that makes the barro negro and owns his own store and shop. Alvaro actually lived in the U.S. for sometime before returning to mexico to open up his own business became a very close friend of mine. He actually threw me a party at his house before I returned to the U.S. I went back to Oaxaca on several occassions to visit him. However, since I last went back to visit him in 2005 I have lost contact with him. Last I heard of him was that he decided to return to th U.S. to Wiscounsin to live with his son.
