The reason there is a village here at all is because the reindeer herding Sami people had this as a meeting point by the river and therefore established a market place here. Today, Jokkmokk's Winter Market in February is World famous and people come from all over the Globe to take part in reindeer races, buy Sami handicraft and have fun. But there is more to Jokkmokk than that, as it also houses an incredibly pretty church and is home to the Swedish Highland- and Sami Museum. Some 40 kilometres north of the village (no distance at all in this region) is also the hydropower village of Porjus with an international crowd. But Jokkmokk's municipality (the size of three south Swedish provinces!) is also the home of most of the Laponia World Heritage site in the form of four national parks: the wild Sarek, the reindeer herding Padjelanta, the water park Stora Sjöfallet and finally Muddus which is north of Jokkmokk itself. Lots of people come here to hike or watch animals in summer. As for me, I love Jokkmokk in winter with the Arctic mid winter light in blue, orange and pink and the Northern lights dancing across the sky at night if you are lucky.
Directions: Along road 45 (Gällivare to Östersund buses). Alternatively, train from Stockholm to Murjek, then bus.
