"Barunga Festival Part 2" Northern Territory Off The Beaten Path Tip by StarAnise&Rocamadour

The Barunga Festival has sports and cultural events during the day and music concerts in the evening. To our amusement we watched the AFL games (by the most athletic barefooted players - amazing) get interrupted by bush pigs. You can join in the spear throwing and fire making competitions. They also had digeridoo making workshop where you literally start with a tree trunk and have to scrape the bark off. You can go to the radio station, etc etc etc. We saw Neil Murray who used to be in the Warumpi Band (a local hero - Murray first learned didg in Barunga, then Bamyili). We also saw some great acts from around Darwin and bands from communities all over the NT were represented. If you want to check out good Aboriginal rock music, try Letterstick Band and Nabarlek.

Beware, the toilet situation isn't great. Ladies - expect long queues, no flushes, no toilet paper and a bit of smell. But a good time for striking up some conversation. No showers either... (It's a DIY festival) If you're not good at roughing it and dont' feel at home among people who aren't speakign English, don't go. If you want to learn some local language and make some local friends, you will have a ball. Again, its hot and no airconditioning. Take lots of water, hat, etc and be prepared to douse yourself regularly!
