The easiest way to communicate with Beijing taxi drivers is by using taxi cards. With their notoriously poor knowledge of English, it's always easier to get where you want to go by showing the driver an address written in Chinese. However, the text in many guidebooks is extremely small, and trying to point through the metal bars or plexiglass cages in some taxis can be quite difficult. I've heard more than one story about people ending up at the wrong destination because the driver thought they were pointing to the line above/below the one they wanted! When people have visited us in Beijing, we've had the most success by giving them a set of flashcards, each with a popular destination written in large Chinese characters (a lot of drivers also seem to be a bit far-sighted). So, to get around Beijing, simply print out the cards, cut them up, and keep them in a pocket. Then each time you get in a taxi, just show the driver the card for where you want to go! Also, be sure to get an address card from your hotel before you head out, so you have something to show the driver to get back!
