After the war the station was handed over to civilian use and was administered by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey. From 1948 the station played an important role in ionospheric research and was a key monitoring site during the International Geophysical year of 1957/8. The base however was closed in January 1962 and subsequently fell into disrepair.
