"Check out the Old Book Stores on Galerie Bortier" Information & Sources Tip by DanielF

Information & Sources, Brussels: 28 reviews and 72 photos

Once the Royal Galeries of Saint Hubert were completed, their architect, Jean-Pierre Cluisenaar, was commissioned with the construction of a new market hall for fruits and vegetables that should host all the merchants that so far sold their products on the Grand' Place and the nearby Herbs Market Street.

This market hall was built with an annexed covered gallery, which is actually the only remain of the complex. After serving as salle de fêtes for a few years, the market hall (a remarkable work of ironcast architecture) was torn down to leave room for office blocks.

The Galerie Bortier nowadays hosts several interesting old-book stores.
