Downtown Backpackers Lodge: "Avoid this hostel in Queenstown" Queenstown Hotel Tip by yozza2005

Queenstown Hotels: 80 reviews and 82 photos

From first appearance, Backpackers Downtown Logde looks like a nice little place to stay, and the sign outside the door advertises a low rate, which includes breakfast. You might think you have landed yourself a deal! The staff at Downtown are laid back and chilled. However, this is a flaw when you require information about the Queenstown and Wanaka area.
When first entering the dorm accommodation, the impression is that it's mainly used by long-stay travelers. The walls are shabby and dirty and the en-suite bathroom is dirty and looks like it hasn't been cleaned for months. The shared toilets and showers are dirty with hair and mud smeared on the walls. The bunks themselves are dirty, the sheets look as if they haven't been cleaned, and the mattresses are lumpy.
If you fancy some entertainment by watching television, you may have to fight with the long-termers for the remote control. Although once you have the remote, the hostel does have some cable television channels -- good for a rainy day. However, the seats are scruffy, old, and again, dirty!
Breakfast is somewhat of a let-down -- just some bread left in the middle of the kitchen -- and you find yourself washing up knives and forks before you can even start having your toast! The hostel does have free internet, on two Apple computers in reception and two in the kitchen, but speeds are slow.
