"Getting Around by Cab" Haikou Transportation Tip by veritasvincit

Haikou Transportation: 3 reviews and 2 photos

We always took the taxi from our hotel to the main shopping centres and tourist sights. Our hotel advised us to bargain for the fare rather than use the meter. But being tourists, we had no idea how much a trip would cost, so it would have impossible to bargain, not knowing what an approximate fare would be. So we decided just to use the meter as it would be easier.

We took taxis to one particular shopping centre often so we knew how much the metered fare would be. However, there was evidence of tampering in a few taxis, resulting in much higher fares, about 50% more. I was particularly incensed at one driver, and he told me just to pay him what I thought was the correct fare and to ignore the meter.

It seemed that these crooked taxis were everywhere, preying on the tourists.
