The nearby Marienbrücke (Mary's Bridge) over Pöllat Gorge, named after Marie of Prussia, provides a view of one of Neuschwanstein's facades.
Maximilian II - the father of Ludwig - had already had paths and lookout points constructed in the area around Hohenschwangau in order to be able to enjoy the scenery. In the 1850s, as a birthday present for his mountain-climbing consort Marie, he had the iron bridge, the "Marienbrucke", built high above the Pollat Gorge.
The view of Neuschwanstein Castle from the bridge behind it (Marienbrucke) is particularly impressive.
