Province of Batanes Off The Beaten Path: 7 reviews and 23 photos
Batanes has a crop of young talented artists. With the help of the government and private organizations like Fundacion Pacita, the kids are trained in painting, photography, sculpture and woodwork.
The works of the young artists are showcased at the Batanes Heritage Center. Go there to appreciate (and buy!) the works. The kids are really good. One painter is being commissioned by a hotel to do several pieces. Souvenir tshirts are also available (they're better than what you see in the souvenir shops in town).
It was at the Center where we met some of the young artists. We also helped to select the winners of the 1st Ivatan Umbrella Painting Competition(!!!). The winning umbrellas plus other works are now on display at the Museo Pambata in Manila until Jan 31, 2007.
The Center is located up in the 2nd floor of the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) building, behind the Basco church. Access is thru the road behind the provincial capitol or thru the church if its side door is open.
