We came to this city from the beautiful coastal city of Chimbote, and the ride was amazing (actually the reason for traveling to Huaraz via Chimbote) Immediately after leaving Chimbote, you pass through mountains and soon meet up with the river and the mountains grow steadily higher. The ride starts out beautiful, the views just keep getting better. Be sure to bring an extra battery for your camera, because you will probably have it on most of the ride even though the extraordinary views could never be adequately captured on film.

The bus ride from Chimbote was 9.5 hours, not the 7-8 that was quoted at the bus station, so don’t count on their estimates to get you places on time. Part of the problem was the frequent stopping, so maybe it you hit it at a good time, you can get through a little quicker. Also, we met a truck coming from the other way in a one-lane tunnel on the side of the mountain, so it took a bit of maneuvering for the other guy to back up and not fall off the mountain... I’m sure that set us back a few minutes. Also, as with any long bus ride, there is a stop for lunch and the length is of course determined by how long it takes the driver to finish eating. :)

Don't drink too much this day, as the “improved road” is bumpy and your bus probaby won't have a bathroom.
