Impressive clouds: a view from Conical Hill.

As mentioned in the tip about the hot pools in Hanmer Springs, it is perfect to combine a walk with the relaxation in the pools. First the walk, then the hot pools, of course.

A short walk or half-day tramp would do for that purpose. There are an incredible lot of short and easy walks in Hanmer Forest, and also a big range of 2.5 to 6h walks. If you stay at Hanmer you can make great day tours.

A not too long walk leads up to Conical Hill from where you have fantastic views over the valley and the mountains. You reach this track just by heading straight ahead on the main road, passing the Thermal Hot Pools. Amuri Road (which is the main road) becomes Conical Hill Road.

A walk we like a lot is the Waterfall Track. A steady climb leads to the 41m high Dog Stream waterfall (from the carpark at the end of Mullans Rd.). A round trip via Spur Track and Fir Trail is possible. It takes about 2.5hrs return. Especially in winter the forest is filled with the song of bellbirds, and there are so many flying around that you will spot them everywhere. Those olive green birds are really bellbirds and not keas, as once American visitors supposed. First keas are five times bigger and they have parrot beaks ;-)
