"A detour not only for the seals of Cape Foulwind" West Coast Things to Do Tip by Kakapo2
West Coast Things to Do: 30 reviews and 93 photos
Most people have a look at the seals of Cape Foulwind, south of Westport, but most of them head straight back to the highway after having looked down to the rather far-away colony. They miss quite something, not only a café/restaurant with a great view (see restaurant tip "The Bay House") but also a fantastic beach named Carters Beach.
This can be reached by turning left at the fork close to the Cape Foulwind beach, and follow up north along the coast.
Our friends always forget the name but when they speak about the "mirror beach" we know they mean Carters Beach. We have been there several times, and every time you had the most wonderful reflections mirrored on the sand.
As this lengthy stretch of beach is gently shelving it is perfect for swimming and long beach walks.
The little township of Carters Beach offers quite a lot of accommodation options. It is a great - peaceful and quiet - alternative to staying in Westport which is only five or six kilometres away.
There is also a walkway around Cape Foulwind, and the roads are good for cycling.
Address: Cape Foulwind - Carters Beach
Directions: From Westport: south on HW67, at fork turn right to HW67A. From south on HW6: 6 km before Westport turn left to Cape Foulwind, after visit of Seal Colony turn left at fork towards Carters Beach.
