Fraser Island is the world's largest sand island with a length 120km and a width of 15km and supposedly contains more sand than the Sahara desert. It has beautiful beaches and if you're lucky you can see whales, dolphins and sharks offshore.
Despite being created entirely of sand it has a lush rainforest cover and you can swim in a couple of freshwater lakes.
You'll need a 4WD to drive around Fraser Island and for taking a car on the island you'll need a permit as it is a National Park.
Lots of different tours to Fraser start from Noosa, Rainbow Beach and Hervey Bay.
If you're lucky (which I was not) you might see one or more dingos.
