  • VALENTIA . the once upon a time Roman capital - Valencia

History states that once upon a time the actual city of Valencia, then called VALENTIA by the Romans, was once the capital of the Roman empire. The remains still ares till visible and can be visited in the nearby town of Sagunto. Just about 25 kilometers on the outskirts of Valencia in the direction of the road going north towards Barcelona. The town is well worth a vist. You may be a person who is intersted in culture or history, however for any fun loving tourist, Sagunto beholds many surpises. You will find the remains of the castle on the top of the mountain with the walls that used to protect the castle. These remains date from the first century and are still maintained in a very good state. Politics however has intervened at different times sometimes with the best of intentions to preserve these precious historical monuments and have been modified with this intention, therefore in some places you can find modifications rather than the original roman structures detriorated by the passing times, but surely worth visiting. Visit the roman theatre where with a little bit of imagination you will still here the roar of the lions while facing the gladiators, fighting for their lives, the plaza mayor, the jewish quarters and the town on the whole are well worth a visit. This is a day trip and can take you about 3 hours. The best ways to get here is by public transport - you have the train station or another option would be hiring a car.
