Exharchia is a small neighborhood close to the centre of Athens on the North side of the University area near Panapistimiou. It is know mostly for its history of left-winged activities, but this is not the description I would give to the everyday life in this lovely neighborhood. Here, you will find many typical old-style tavernas, with very cheap prices, due to the fact that this neighborhood is very close to the university. Many students live in this area, but it is also the home of many old Athenians and much historical interest can be found if one looks closely enough. One of the local High Schools on Skouzi Hill, for instance, was designed by one of Greeces most famous architects, Pikioni. Pikioni is also famous for his construction of the stone pathways surrounding the Acropolis. Exharichia, is also a neighborhood full of interesting little shops containing such things as bookbinders, antiques, old books and other gift shops.

Because of the quaint and cheap prices of the tavernas, it is a frequent spot for some of our Athens, VT Meetings! Here are a few pics from one of the VT Meetings:
