My first experience of walking through a redwood forest came in the Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Forest, northeast of Crescent City in Del Norte County. This short walk is located on highway 199, not far east from the Elk Valley Road intersection.
A peculiar sense of peace descended on me upon entering the forest. There was a palpable sense of peace in the forest. My first up close and personal relationship with redwoods in their native land was stunning. They really are mighty looking trees, soaring so perfectly vertically skywards. The lack of branches on their straight trunks and the vertical lines of their bark emphasise the shearness of their form! They truly are a sight to behold.
I was based in Crescent City for one night and a trip to this state park is an easy drive. If you were staying longer in Crescent City you could spend a whole day in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park.
