From old port in Marseille you can sail to the island, where an old castle is situated.
A former fortress built under François I in 1524, which became a state prison in the 17th century. The novel of Alexander Dumas writer 'The count of Monte Christo' has made it famous.

In the port of Marseille, Edmond Dantes is unjustly accused of treason on his wedding day with Mercedes, and is sent to Le Château d'If, an island prison. He meets another prisoner there, finds out why he was framed, and by whom (a cousin of his wife called Mondego). He decides to take revenge on the people involved in his imprisonment. One night, he is told of a great treasure left on the Island of Monte-Christo. He escapes after fourteen years, finds the treasure and assumes the title of the Count of Monte-Christo.
