Yemen Things to Do: 143 reviews and 301 photos

Shibam is famous for its cream-coloured mud-brick "skyline" in the middle of the Hadramaut desert. It is probably the best-known sight of Yemen after the Sanaa Old Town. The town itself - once you walk trough the streets - is quite dirty due to the presence of goat herds within the city. Some houses are in derelict state. Shibam is surely more beautiful seen from the outside than from the inside. One of the reconstructed houses is open to the public and worthwhile visiting; keep in mind that the locals don`t like it if you take photographs from above (you could accidentally take a photo of a woman).

Opposite the Old Town of Shibam is a viewpoint/plateau from where you can take phantastic photos of the Shibam skyline, especially near sunset.

The Hadramaut Shibam is not to be confused with the rather unspectacular village Shibam west of Sanaa.
