The top rated place to stay in Natchez is Monmouth Plantation, an authentic antebellum estate, dating back to 1818. Fully restored and updated, but still with almost 200 years of charm, it has been named one of the 10 most romantic lodgings in America by Glamour Magazine and USA Today.

It was a bit of a splurge for a couple of budget travelers like us to stay here, but we thought well worth it for the unique experience it offered. We had a package which gave us two nights lodging, two full southern breakfasts, and one dinner. It turned out to be one of the most enjoyable and memorable places we have ever stayed.

We declined a room in the main house because the antique bed was too short for my 6'2" frame. Our room, in one of the garden cottages, had a queen-size bed, front porch with rocking chairs, a fireplace with gas logs, and was exquisitely furnished and decorated.

One of the enjoyable parts of staying at Monmouth was exploring the park-like grounds. There is a walking path around a tranquil pond, with numerous features such as a gazebo, chapel, decorative bridge and beautiful plantings.

A stay at Monmouth also includes a free tour of the mansion, built in the early 1800s and once the home of the first governor of Mississippi. This place is full of history and nostalgia. The service is second to none, complete with nightly turn downs and a chocolate on your pillow.

If you've ever dreamed of living - just for a day - in the antebellum Deep South, then Monmouth Plantation will sweep you away for a romantic interlude - yet with every modern comfort.

Monmouth Plantation is listed by the Small Luxury Hotels of the World, is rated 4 Diamonds by AAA, and has received numerous other top awards and disignations.
