"Customer service the Belgian way" Antwerp Local Custom Tip by flyfreak

Antwerp Local Customs: 160 reviews and 171 photos

The "friendliness" of Belgians was a challenge for me in the times I lived in Antwerp. Coming from Austria, a country that mainly lives on tourism and therefore being raised up that I have to be friendly to every foreigner/tourist, I was shocked by the way you get treated in Belgium as a customer or also as a tourist. You can happen to enter a shop, buy something and leave the place/shop without having exchanged a word with the shop attendant (no hello, no thank you or anything). Appearantly the Belgians do not realise the importance of being friendly and attentive with customers (no matter if you are in a restaurant, shop or work in a company). It is the way they are, they are not being impolite, but simply not friendly either. I observed that in winter it is even harder for them to have a smile on their face. As soon as summer comes and the temperatures rise, you will notice a shift in the people's behaviour aswell! :-)
