Dhammayazika Pagoda, Bagan: 3 reviews and 15 photos
Dhammayazika pagoda was the first one we visited. It is located in the West Pwasaw region and belongs to a group of more remoted pagodas. As you can climb on its terrace you can get your first views over Bagan, a sight which leaves you speechless about how big and beautiful the area is.
Dhammayazika in Pali (ancient language) means "Pertaining the King of Law”. The p[agoda was built in 1198 to enshrine the relics brought by King Narapatisithu from the King of Sri Lanka.
The structure of Dhammayazika Pagoda has pentagonal terraces instead of the usual Bagan pagodas, the square base. On each side of the pagoda, there is a small temple housing an image of Buddha. The fifth temple is placed with the future becoming Buddha. All the five names of the Buddha are Kakusandha, Konagamana, Kassapa, Gotama and Metteyya.
The terracotta tiles depicting jataka legends (folklore and mythic literature, primarily associated with the Theravada Buddhist tradition) set into terraces here are in good conditions
