While on Vancouver Island, we had to sample what the west coast of the island was like, where the waves travelling thousands of miles across the Pacific Ocean finally wash up on Canada. We drove through Port Alberni on a beautiful, mountainous and winding road to the rugged section of coast between Ucluelet and Tofino, part of the Pacific Rim National Park as shown here.
Our first stop was in Ucluelet, a small town well set up for tourists. There was a good sized tour boat headed out that afternoon, so we jumped aboard for a tour of the coastline toward the south. It was a great sunny day, so we spent it topside enjoying the passing scenery including a good-sized pod of very large Steller Sea Lions sunbathing on a rocky outcrop (2nd photo). We kept our distance because bulls of this species can weigh 1500-lb (680-kg) and reach lengths of 12-ft (3.7-m)! While we were cruising these coastal inlets we also had a good look at a Bald Eagle as he lined up and then glided in for a quick grab at a surface feeding fish it had spotted (3rd photo). Make sure you somehow get out on the water if you are ever on this coast.
Directions: In the Pacific Rim part of Vancouver Island, between Ucluelet and Tofino
