Papa Chano's Taqueria is a relatively cheap little lunch and dinner spot on Alvarado Street in downtown Monterey. Though in the most expensive area of town, the food here is some of the cheapest around...$1.95 for a taco, $2.50 for a quesadilla, and $4 for a burrito, with free chips and salsa! But the food is plain American-style Mexican, the main courses are a little on the small side, the chips were stale on my visit, and the service was average at best.

I had the enchilada plate for about $7 plus a bottle of beer (~$2.50). The enchiladas were very tasty with small chunks of seasoned beef and a tasty red sauce. The sides of beans and rice were good and plentiful. Their salsa bar has some good pico de gallo, green and red salsa to spice up your meal.

Though not the best Mexican food around, it is the best bargain I've found in central Monterey.

Papa Chano's should not be confused with the similarly named Papa Chevo's which is a small chain that can be found throughout the Monterey area.
