"Go Inside the Madelaine Too" L'église de la Madeleine Tip by hquittner
L'église de la Madeleine, Paris: 55 reviews and 134 photos
The outside is everybody's shot from several angles as it sits at the top of the Rue Royale looking down to the Pl. de la Concorde. It was built under Napoleon's orders as a Hall of Fame for his Grande Armee (by P. Vignon, 1806). As you know, this effort was ultimately not a success. It is a giant Greek Temple with a peristyle of 52 fluted Corinthian columns each over 50 ft. tall (a big version of the Maison Carree in Nimes?), only completed in 1842. It is a white elephant and has little function, but is a church. Go inside.
