Coastal Scene along the garden route

The Garden Route is one of the most beautiful and popular travel destinations in South Africa.

It starts in the west at Swellendam and ends - officially - at Humansdorp just before Port Elizabeth. The most interesting part stretches from Mossel Bay to the Storms River mouth in the Tsitsikamma National Park.

Along its stunning coast the Garden Route displays steep rocky cliffs alternating with white sand beaches and dense evergreen montane rainforests. Numerous rivers originate in the bordering mountain range which is part of the Great Escarpment. They meander their way through the green coastal plain and eventually flow into the Indian Ocean.

Interesting places to stop are:
Oudtshoorn with its Ostrich farms and nearby Cango Caves

Knysna - the touristic centre of the Garden Route. The town also got a little waterfront now, with a yacht harbour, restaurants, boutiques etc (altho be warned, they all seem to close at the weekend)

Plettenberg - an exclusive seaside resort with the most beautiful beaches of the Garden Route. The watersport possibilities are plentiful, and in season the bay it is an excellent place to watch whales and dolphins.

The Tsitsikamma National Park - a 80 kilometre long coastal strip between Nature's Valley and the mouth of the Storms River. Here there is an almost untouched natural landscape with plenty of walks and hikes.
