The synagogue was built in the sixteenth century as chapel of cult for the mayor Mordechai Maisel and its family. Maisel had become wealthy lending money to the emperor Rudolf II to finance the wars against the Turks. The original building was destroyed in 1689 by a fire. The actual Gothic style goes up again to the beginning of the twentieth century. Today the synagogue entertains an interesting collection of Jewish silvers from the Reinassance to the twentieth century.
