"Graben - Pedestrianised Shopping Street" Vienna Favorite Tip by Ekaterinburg

Fondest memory: Strolling in Vienna's inner city pedestrianised shopping streets is a pleasure for shoppers, window-shoppers or just plain passing-the-time-of-day'ers. Of these my favourite is definitely Graben the wide street leading up to Stephansplatz. The name comes from the Roman word for ditch and a ditch or moat did originally exist here until it was filled in. Now it is an incredibly elegant street and for me anyhow epitomised my ideas of a very genteel Vienna with well-dressed people wearing expensive accesories. The shops are mostly Austrian ( the international chains tend to be in Mariahilfer Strasse) and some of the buildings they are housed in are architectural showpieces. In the centre is the large plague monument and all around are important and historical buildings. But what I liked about Graben was mostly just the ambience and the relaxed vibe. In December, of course, it was beautifully decorated for Christmas but I think this is a street which would be attracrtive in all seasons.
