The Penn Brewery on Pittsburgh's North Shore is one of my favorite places in Pittsburgh. Unique and full of character, this restaurant is the unusual combination of microbrewery and German restaurant. The beers here are all on the lighter side and include a pilsner, weizen, holiday bock, and their relatively dark lager called Penn Dark. Food covers the spectrum of German dishes from schnitzel to a variety of wursts. The restaurant interior closely resembles an authentic German beer hall with its long tables and benches that can be shared by customers on busy days. There is also a small 8-person bar.

We sat at the bar during our visit where we enjoyed a few of the great beers including the Penn Dark and the weizen (22 ounces for $4.50 and 16 ounces for $3.50). I enjoyed a great meal of their rouladen with red cabbage and spaetzle ($17) while my friend had the Wurstplatte which offered three of their tasty German sausages along with sauerkraut ($14). The rouladen was very tasty with some wonderful gravy, but not really like the rouladen I remember from Germany...as this had pickles inside the meat. The wursts were also good, but one tasted suspiciously like a PNC Park hot dog.

This restaurant is a great experience and has some awesome beer. The food is unique and flavorful, but not quite what I remember from Germany!

Happy Hour is from 5 to 7 and specials vary by the day: Monday Penn Dark $2/pint; Tuesday Penn Pilsner $2/pint; Wednesday Penn Weizen $3/22oz; Thursday Bartenders Choice $2/pint.
