You shouldn’t miss a visit to the Summer Palace during your visit to Beijing, although as it is so big (290 hectares) you do need several hours there to do it justice. It is located about 15km from the centre of Beijing and the best way to get there is by taxi. It is the largest and best preserved imperial garden in China and was a summer resort of the Qing royal family. What you can see there today was laid out during the 18th Century, however in 1888 the Emperess Dowager Cixi misused navy funds for her own benefit and reconstructed it. 3/4 of the Summer Palace is taken up by Kunming Lake. There is a total of around 3,000 structures including towers, pavilions, bridges and corridors.
The way that we toured the Summer Palace was to walk along to the 17 arch bridge, crossed to South Lake island got a boat from there to the Marble boat area, walked along the Long corridor, explored the buildings on Longevity hill (Tower of Buddhist incense etc) and then explored the buildings nearer the front such as Hall of Jade Ripples. We spent a total of 5 hours here and still missed some areas.
