"Rangitoto Island" New Zealand Things to Do Tip by easterntrekker

This island, which is actually a dormant volcano is only 600 years old. It rises 250 meters above the Hauraki Gulf. It took us an hour to climb to the summit and for me alot of huffing and puffing. We stopped frequently to admire the scenery....the crusty ground where once molten lava flowed, trees ferns and views from the top of Kawau Island to the north and Great Barrier and Little Barrier to the north-east.
There are no shops on the island so you need to take water and food....don't forget sunblock!!

The ferry cost $20.00 return.
Departs Auckland: 9.15am, 12.15pm, 3.00pm
Departs Rangitoto: 9.45am, 12.45pm, 3.30pm

There are also tours ...which are take you to the summit on a train. Costs $50.00

Address: Auckland's inner harbour
Directions: Rangototo is a 20 minute ferry ride from Auckland
