"Richelieu Garden and War Memorial" Nord-Pas-de-Calais Things to Do Tip by smschley

Richelieu Garden was created on 1862 on the site of the fortifications of the old city. Between 1895 and 1924, the platform there was occupied by the famous bronze by Rodin, "The Burghers of Calais", then by the war memorial for the war of 1914-1918 created by sculptor Moreau-Vauthier. This monument was seriously damaged by the bombardments under the occupation during WWII.
In 1956 the garden underwent major renovation and was totally redesigned, but it was until 1962 that this monument was replaced by a new memorial, the work of Yves de Coëtlogon that unites the memory of the dead of the two wars in a single homage. An allegory of Peace presses an olive tree branch to her breast.
Directions: Corner of Boulevard Clemenceau and Rue Richelieu
