Favorite thing: Of course, that's a little presumptuous but it is fair to say that a single pie shop revived the town's flagging fortunes.
Beechworth, a town built on gold, today flourishes because someone ignored advice and went ahead with his dream of having the best pie shop. There are now four bearing that name in different towns and the founder commands up to five figure sums for speaking engagements. Not bad for someone who had trouble reading and writing and left school early.
Fondest memory: My first experience was at Echuca when I walked into Beechworth Bakery on a Sunday morning and found 12 staff flat out and heaps of customers. I couldn't believe it and delved further.
