East Bergholt is a little village with a very important part in British history as the womderful English painter Constable lived nearby and painted the area in some of the my favourite paintings. The cottage (which dates from the 16th century) near Flatford Mill has a Constable exhibition. Mind your head though as you walk through the tiny cottage as the timberbeams are hard and low. There is a tearoom and gift shop, it is owned by the National Trust. The cottage was William Lotts cottage in Constables days. Flatford Mill is not open to the public. From the cottage there is a lovely walk along the river Stour which takes you through the area Constable loved and painted so wonderfully. You cannot park at the cottage (there are a few disabled parking places but there is a (PAID) parking area which is well signposted as you arrive from East Bergholt. If you drive to Dedham you can park free of charge and then do the walk along the river. It is a circular walk so it does not matter where you start and it is well signposted. Be careful when you walk through East Bergholt to Flatford as the road is very narrow and twisty and in places there are no pavements to walk on.
Directions: The walk anf Flatford Mill are well signposted.
