"Visit the Broome Bird Observatory" Broome Things to Do Tip by bsfreeloader

Broome Things to Do: 77 reviews and 176 photos

Located on the shores of Roebuck Bay approximately 25 kilometers from Broome, the Broome Bird Observatory is a must visit for those with even a minimal interest in nature. Roebuck Bay boasts the highest diversity of migratory waders in Australia and is considered one of the very best places in the world to observe shorebirds. The observatory, which is the best place to view these magnificent birds, is best visited from September to April, when shorebird populations are at their peak. In addition to shorebirds, the observatory has watering stations that draw numerous species of landbirds, including several species of honeyeater, Great Bowerbird, and Zebra and Long-tailed Finch. The same area is also patrolled by a Brown Goshawk, which has a tendency to chase everything else away. If you decide to go, note that the road to the observatory is unpaved and a 4WD vehicle is necessary.
