"Visit the Mareeba Wetlands" Cairns Things to Do Tip by bsfreeloader

Cairns Things to Do: 344 reviews and 728 photos

Lying thirteen kilometers northwest of Mareeba, the Mareeba Wetlands is a beautiful pocket of grass-fringed, lily-filled lagoons that attracts seasonal flocks of many of tropical Queensland’s water birds. Among other less prominent species, the wetlands provides refuge for pygmy geese, whistling ducks, cormorants, darters, jacanas, and several large waders, including Brolga, Black-necked Stork, and several egret and heron species. Canoe rental is available, but you are more likely to see a maximum number of species by hiking some of the trails and going on a ranger-led tour.
