"If you find yourself in Mexico..." Mexico Things to Do Tip by Lyn_2

Mexico Things to Do: 627 reviews and 826 photos

If you find yourself in Mexico City on a Sunday, head down to XOCHIMILCO for a lot of fun. You can hire a colorful boat for a float (Venice style) down the water highways that date back to the Aztecs. Reportedly there are a hundred miles of canals lined with local homes, farms, flower gardens, bridges and markets. On Sundays, the Mexican families hire the boats for birthday parties and celebrations. I even saw Santa Clause and his elves floating down the canals before Christmas. While you are in your boat, others will glide by your boat with beer, pop, fruits, grilled corn on the cob, fresh roses, blankets ect. Mariachi Bands also float by and will board your boat (if you request) to play their music. A boat load of French tourists came along side our boat and they had brought their own wine, tableclothes, cheese and bread. They brought the Mariachi's aboard and the French danced while the music played. It's really great fun. The more people you go with the more fun it is. You can rent a boat for 2 all the way up to a group of 12. Sundays are the best as few people will be on the canals during the week.

Address: Southern area of Mexico City in Xochimilco.
