A spearhead landed here in the night of the 5th of June to the 6th of June to protect and take over this important crossing into the mainland of France. The parachutists were transported behind enemy lines and their task was to hold bridgets and important parts of the infrastructure the troops had landed along the beaches of the Normandie and passed the Altantic Wall. A museum and memorial can now be found next to the site of the battle, on Major Howard road. The most prominent item on display is the original bridge itself. In 1993 it was replaced by a slightly larger, more modern bridge which emulated the design of the original one.
