Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor. It was here, when on April 12, 1861, that the fort was bombarded by Confederate guns, thus starting the US Civil War. Photograph is from the Official Website of Forth Sumter National Monument.
Its significance in US history is undeniable. For anyone who is either a history or Civil war buff, a visit here is mandatory. The fort itself is a classic example of mid 19th Century military architecture.
