As Charleston has a compact historical area, it's best to explore it on foot. The carriage rides though surely informative and perhaps entertaining are aimed at tourists with money to burn. A pamphlet at the tourist information desk will point out for instance, that the Louis DeSaussure House (pictured)at 1 East Battery street was built between 1858 and 1861 by its namesake autioneer who delt in everything from ships to slaves.
