There are people who are quite desperate for some of your money. They think you are rich, even if you are carrying dirty and old backpacks and not designer luggage cases. And you are rich, compared to them. You were able to come up with the money to fly to their country weren't you?! But, although we are rich compared to them, we do not all have money to throw away with abandon...

so, if you don't want to be forever 'tipping' people, don't let them get a hand on your luggage to 'help' you carry it into the hotel, or put it into the taxi or bus, because they will demand payment for that 2 or 3 seconds of 'help' that their hand was on your bag!

Don't get into privately run cars, who tell you that they are cheaper than a taxi. They are not.

Always make sure you know where you're going (keep a map out) or look like you know where you're going. Or taxis WILL go the long way.
