"The infamous 6th Street" 6th Street Tip by tee0206

6th Street, Austin: 42 reviews and 45 photos

I'm personally not that into the 6th Street scene, but if you do want to go to 6th Street, which I suggest you at least check out, look for the specials. Some places will have 25 cent wells or drafts on certain nights. It's a poor college student's (or in my case, poor AmeriCorps volunteer's) dream. If it's a particularly crazy night (like on Halloween or Halloween weekend), it's fun to find an uncrowded patio (such as the Iron Cactus, sometimes) and people watch. There's a Coyote Ugly if you want to see bartenders (and other people) dance on the bar. I personally prefer the dive bars, such as Jackelope and Maggie Mae's. Pete's Dualing Piano Bar is great. They have two pianos playing anything from Buddy Holly to Jimmy Buffett. It's one of the few places on 6th Street that charge cover, but it's worth it. If you want to go someplace a little classier, check out The Belmont, which is a little further west than the main strip of 6th Street bars. Generally, 6th Street is full of college students and tourists. I think it's kind of exciting to just walk down the strip, hear all of the live music going on in the bars, and have bar employees shouting out the night's specials. There's a certain kind of energy emanating from 6th Street that can be exciting. I just don't enjoy going there on a regular basis.

Dress Code: This is Texas. Lots of places are casual.
