"Glendalough" County Wicklow Things to Do Tip by kevarms

County Wicklow Things to Do: 49 reviews and 87 photos

Deep in the heart of the beautiful Wicklow Mountains, this monastic site was founded by the hermit priest St Kevin (not me!) in the 6th century. It eventually became one of the most famous monasteries in Europe. Pretty much all that remains is ruins, although the extraordinary tower is well preserved and it's worth taking the guided tour, which I found very interesting. Further up the valley are two lakes which are nice to stroll around. The first is Lower Lake and an easy walk from Glendalough. The second is Upper Lake, a bit of a hike but much more impressive, complete with waterfall and the supposed sites of two of St Kevin's hermitty (?) places.

Directions: Difficult without your own transport, I would suggest the St Kevin's bus from Dublin which leaves from St Stephen's Green in in the morning, returning in the afternoon.
