To one side of the Taj Mahal is a mosque or masjid which is still used for prayer on Fridays. The mosque is of redstone and faces Mecca. On the roof are 4 octagonal towers on the corners of the building and three large domes. The Mosque sits on a red sandstone platform and on this platform is a small marble piece which is highly polished to reflect the vision of the Taj Mahal. In the mosque there are markings in black marble for 539 prayer mats. Like the Taj, there are panels of calligraphy depicting quotations from the Kuran.
