"Do the South Transept Rose Window Too" Notre Dame de Paris Tip by hquittner
Notre Dame de Paris, Paris: 652 reviews and 1,336 photos
The South Rose is seen best from the North transept. Being on the sunlit side it undergoes color changes during the day and at sunset. The exposure to weather has caused it to be extensively reconstructed more than once (and thus revised). Its pattern is based upon the number 12 with rings of the 12 Apostles, and 24 martyrs and confessors. This reduces to the 4 Evangelists surrounding Christ in Majesty at the center. It is supported by 16 lancet windows (12+4). The center four show an interesting symbolism derived from Chartres picturing the four Evangelists raised on the shoulders of 4 Hebrew prophets so that they can see the future better.
