Canim means “my dear” and “cigerim” means “my liver”, but actually it is an expression for describing the beloved one.
Liver is very common food in Turkish cuisine. It is eaten fried, grilled or cooked. Canim Cigerim serves it on the shish as grilled. If you do not eat liver –like me-, they also have lamb shish. But there is not any other choice.
When you sit in this restaurant (it is very small and very popular, so you are lucky if you find a table) waiters start to bring some plates to your table without asking: One full of fresh mint, one with parsley, one with fresh onions with sumac, one with “acili ezme”, a type of pinched tomatoes, parsley and onion salad and another one with grilled tomatoes, pepper and onions. After that they ask you about your order (meat or liver) and preferred drink. We usually drink “ayran” or “salgam suyu” with meat. But you can choose other beverages like coke or juices.
Actually this kind of serving is a tradition in Adana (a south-eastern city of Turkiye), but rare in Istanbul.
