In mid-19th century most of the 7.000 citizens of Varazdin decided their town needs a theatre where plays would be in Croatian. It always amazes me how small places managed to build such imposing buildings back then.
Varazdin theatre is specially interesting for architects since it was the first theatre building built by then young Viennese architect Hermann Helmer.
Later this same architect will, together with his friend Ferdinand Fellner, build theatres and concert houses throughout the Monarchy, including the theatres in Zagreb and Rijeka but also Stadttheater and Volkstheater in Vienna, Nepszinhaz and Vigsinhaz in Budapest, Stadtheater in Augsburg; theatres in Brno, Bratislava and i Karlovy Vari, Deutsches Theater in Prague, Stadttheater and Tonhalle in Zürich, Theater unter der Linden in Berlin, Stadttheater in Graz, Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg, New Theatre in New York, Theatre in Odessa.... to name just the few.
People of Varazdin definitely knew how to choose based on the quality of the drawings since at the time the theatre was built mr. Helmer was not the big name of the architectural scene.
