"Broadstairs ~ quite a long day's outing!" London Off The Beaten Path Tip by Jenniflower

Easily doable in a day trip from London, Broadstairs has the beach and some lovely historical spots to visit - like Dickens' home :)
In the olden days, Broadstairs was called Bradstow. It was originally a fishing village of note. It has a close association with St Peters, a picturesque village further inland. It's current name comes from the 'broad stairs' that are seemingly carved out of the chalk cliff there.
Broadstairs is a little like Fish Hoek, my home town in South Africa. Although vastly different in many ways, they both are not heavily commercialised, and hold some tradition... are maybe a little backwards in going forwards perhaps?? I love it.
We took a long drive one day and just headed toward this part of the world.. and ended up here. Looked quaint, so hopped out. More importantly though, it being Easter Sunday, most restaurants were closed, so we had to find something that was open! And find it we did! Great food, cheery faces (who likes to work on Easter Sunday???), well worth it.
Sand is brown but at least it IS sand, not pebbles. As a South African, this makes a lot of difference :) Weather was cold and drizzly, but the mood was good!
ps: If you'd like to contact the mayor for any reason (as you do!), I have provided his email address below ;)
(This tip appears in Kent too, so pls do not rate it if you have rated the Kent one already. Thanks).
