Technical Museum, Speyer: 30 reviews and 63 photos
One of the funniest museums I have ever spent time in, this one has so many impressive vehicles it is hard to be bored even if you are not that interested in trains, plains and automobiles. The highlight of the visit was the climb up to this Boeing 747 where you could even walk on a wing and where children could go back down along a 54 metre slide! Other favourites I found are in two of the travelogues below and include wooden cars, a Mini doubledecker and not least the huge Belgian automatic musical instruments. Bring lots of 1 euro coins or purchase special tokens at the entrance to put in motion lots of things in the museum such as the instruments or various engines, especially if you visit with children as they will love you for it! Apart from the Boeing, other highlights include and Antonov22 freighter plane, a submarine to climb through, a Chinese steam locomotive and various other impressive things. There are also lots of cars and motorbikes, fire engines and a section with a damaged Messerschmitt which I found interesting since it came down on a frozen lake in Sweden during the war and had to be salvaged from the bottom of the lake recently. The museum has a sister site in Sinsheim near Heidelberg (including a Concorde) so if you are a real enthusiast, you can combine a visit to the two as it is not far away.
The entrance fee also allows you to visit the neighbouring Wilhelms Building with further exhibitions (see the following tip). If you pay extra, you can also opt for a film in the IMAX cinema, although personally I don't find it worth it since most of you will have similar IMAX films running somewhere in your home countries. Outside the museum there is a playground with little attractions such as swings and waterslides which you pay a couple of euros for.
Directions: The huge Boeing is visible from the cathedral park...
