Mary Washington was the mother of Gerorge Washington. George was the first of five children - his father, a widower, had brought another three into marriage with him. Mary was left a widow in April 1743 - George was but 9 - and it was left to her to run the 600 acre farm -found across the Rappahanock and a couple miles south at Ferry Farm which can be visited. She brought up the family and ran the farm for many years. As she was getting on in age, George bought her this home im town in 1772 - Mary was 64. The house is within walking distance of Mary's daughter's Kenmore mansion - which you can also visit. Period furnishings and personal possesions are included among the items you can see when visiting the house.
